History of the Alexandria Chapter
The Alexandria Chapter of Mocha Moms was
conceived in the minds of two sisters who bonded over a holiday dinner back in December 2000.
It was during that family gathering that Randi Agenbroad and Sheila Gardner shared the
challenges and triumphs of motherhood in general and being stay-at-home mothers of color in particular.
They soon discovered that motherhood was not the only thing they
had in common. Sheila, a veteran mother of three children ranging in
ages from one to six and Randi, having given birth to a son just three weeks prior, found that they gained the energy of harmony and peace that only comes
from sharing with someone who truly "gets it."
They wanted the experience to continue, not just for themselves,
but for others like them. Their intent was to fill a void by creating a
means of support for women of color with similar backgrounds and beliefs who had made the same choices in putting the needs of their children and family first. They also felt that it was
critical to their children's self-esteem that they have a group of friends that they could identify with.
Today, sisterhood
continues to be the driving principle of Mocha Moms, Inc., Alexandria and has evolved to include approximately 21 active
members of our extended family. Like black women throughout history, we can do it all. We are educated, professional
and capable, but we need the sisterhood support that only our sisters can provide. If you are interested in becoming
